As Gaza ceasefire talks proceed in Cairo, Egypt's former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy has expressed his opinion that neither Israel nor Hamas are likely to accept a long-term peace deal. He believes that the longer the violence persists in Gaza, the greater the risk of a wider conflict becomes. He suggests that the only way to achieve a lasting peace is through a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, such that failure to pursue this solution would result in continued operations by the militant Islamist group Hamas.
